Over the last fifteen years as a family physician, I have observed developments in the field of medicine. As a graduate of chemical engineering, an adjunct professor of environmental studies and sitting on committees for the environment for my city and for my provincial college of family physicians and now on government advisory panels, I have followed current issues in the nuclear power, petroleum and pesticide industries. As a leader in a physicians’ peace group, I have reflected on military affairs, small arms and the arms trade.
Since I began medical school, conventional medical practice has reversed itself on many issues, from beta blockers being contra-indicated in heart failure to being used to treat it, from forbidding breastfeeding because of ‘breast milk jaundice’, to encouraging more frequent breastfeeding to deal with neonatal jaundice, from enforcing the prone position in newborns to avoid aspiration, to advocating ‘back only’ sleep position to avoid SIDS, from treating low
back pain with forced immobilization, then with active mobilization and finally allowing activity as tolerated.
